Objectives

The course aims to provide basic knowledge of macroeconomics and applied microeconomics, the latter focusing on the areas of environmental policy and agricultural policy and international trade.

- analyse various explanations for cyclical fluctuations in the short term in both closed and open economies;
- explain what determines the inflation rate, unemployment, and economic growth both in the short and long run;
- analyse choices within macroeconomic policy, with reference to both theory and empirical observations;
- use microeconomic methods to elucidate trade-offs and conflicts between various goals with regard to environmental and agricultural policy;
- explain how environmental and agricultural policy can be formulated to achieve socioeconomically efficient outcomes;
- analyse international trade and its effects on welfare and other political goals;
- explain the basic features of Swedish agricultural and environmental policy.

Content

- The course is conducted with lectures, exercises, a compulsory project work and own study time.

- The course consists of two parts, one part on macroeconomics and the other part on agricultural and environmental economics. The macroeconomics part is about understanding how an economy – for instance the Swedish economy – works, and how it can be managed. The agricultural and environmental economics part is about (i) understanding why environmental policy is needed and how it should be designed, and (ii) using microeconomic tools to shed light on questions related to agricultural policy.
