Analytical and Quantitative GC-MS

This is a hands-on course in combined gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS). You will learn how to operate a GC-MS and get a "driving license" for these instruments. The course includes lectures in programming of GC and MS, explaining how and why in combined gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, mixed with practical exercises in programming both GC and MS.

The practical part of the course is to construct and evaluate different methods of quantification, by using the analytical instrumentation at Chemical Ecology, Department of Plant Protection Biology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) on Campus Alnarp.

Prior knowledge

The course is intended to PhD students in life sciences, such as biology, ecology, chemical ecology, analytical or medical chemistry or related fields of science.

Objectives

After completion of the course, the student should:  understand combined gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS)  know how to choose an analytical column, and why …  know different methods for quantification, and how to perform reliable quantitative analysis in GC-MS

Content

Additional information

The laboratory practice will run during several days, and the evaluation of different quantification methods should be reported both as a written lab report, to be mailed or handed in, and as an oral presentation (PowerPoint, etc).
