Silviculture of Temperate Forests

This course is about silviculture for the sustainable management of temperate forests in Europe. We will study and discuss a wide range of paradigms for silviculture, and we will visit forests where these are implemented. We will look at even-aged plantation forestry, continuous cover forestry, close-to-nature forestry, multifunctional forestry, forestry for high-quality timber production, urban forestry, restoration forestry and historical management approaches.

The course emphasizes ecologically-based and nature-oriented silviculture and includes a large range of forest types. We will examine 10 conifer species and 20 hardwood species in detail and will visit forests where these are managed in pure as well as mixed stands.

The presentation and discussion of topics gradually progress from the basic to the advanced level. There will be classroom lectures, classroom exercises, field trips, outdoor lectures, field exercises, group work, student presentations and interactive discussions.

The course includes two one-week study tours in Denmark, Germany or other European countries and some one-day tours in Sweden. Students pay the costs of accommodation (youth hostels) and meals during the study tours and cover part of the travel costs.

Course set-up

Due to Covid-19, most teaching sessions in Silviculture of Temperate Forests 2021 will be conducted via Zoom. Filmed field tours will be available on video through the course portal. Weekly discussion and group work sessions will be organized on campus; these can be attended physically or online through Zoom. The physical main location for the course is the Silvicum Building at 3 Sundsvägen in S-23053 Alnarp, Sweden. Students are expected to organize themselves additional field visits in their local environment and additional group work through Zoom. A PS regarding Covid-19: The decision to offer Silviculture of Temperate Forests 2021 as an online course was based on the Covid-19 situation. The course usually includes 3 weeks of field tours to Denmark, Germany and France. Unfortunately, the budget cannot cover the additional costs of the additional requirements which under the current circumstances would be needed to fulfil in terms of transportation and lodging. Next, the Covid-19 situation tends to change at short notice and so do the restrictions that prevail in different countries and in different regions. The attendance of international students on the course would further complicate these matters. Moreover, some of the large numbers of local hosts have expressed their concern regarding the arrangement, for various reasons (including health concerns and concerns on setting up a realistic and reasonable schedule for the tours). You are welcome to contact me again if you need further clarification or want to discuss alternative options.
