Structure and Politics of the Global Forest Sector

The course is based on learning activities, for example lectures, seminars, oral presentations, written assignments and study visits. Activities can be individual as well as group based. Compulsory attendance is required at for example study visits, guest lectures and seminars.

The course takes it’s starting point in topical forest related societal challenges concerning e.g. land use, industrial production, use of resources, demographic changes and climate change. Throughout the course the sustainable development goals (SDG:s) established by the United Nations in 2015 are used and related to. In relation to these challenges questions about ecological, social and economic sustainability, the forest industries role and prerequisites, and how political and economic governance can be designed to achieve different political goals are discussed.

The course focus are at (1) fundamental knowledge on the forest resource and the forest industry structure, development and role in society – with global as well as local perspectives; and (2) the content in international and national forest policy, as well as models for market based and political tools. During the coursedifferent regions with different circumstances regarding forest resources, forest industry and social structure are in focus.

By providing insight into how the forest sector contribute to societies need; how the sector interact with other sectors in society; and about political balances between different interests and values, the students are inspired to reflect about how different stakeholders in the forest sector are balanced and how the contribution from the sector can be improved. During the whole course the forest sector decisions, how forest policy evolves and we reflect over stakeholders, conflicts of interest, power and responsibility at global, regional and national level are discussed.

Very welcome to the course

Structure and Politics in the Global Forest Sector

Some students are admitted with a condition that means that you might have to pay your admission fee before the course startsor that you have to show more prerequisites.

Information:

The course have for long been a 2-Campus course with students and teackers in both Uppsala and Umeå. Due to Covid-19 restrictions it last year was converted to a distance course and it worked out well. The pandemy is not quite other yet and we will stay with the distance format this autumn as well. I know that some students long for lectures and seminars IRL and I hope you can find ways to collaborate with other students during the course. In some assignments it will be group work and maybe you can gather in small groups to acjieve a little better social situation.

The course is based on 6 work packages with written assignments and oral seminars. There is no written exam in the end. Teh seminars and the written assignments is the examination. We also intend to have several guest lectures from many different parts of the globe. We are still working of the exact schedule.

The course is based of the students engagement and needs your full attention to build the course and that you participate actively in all parts. Therefore we have two levels of compulsory moments. All seminars are compulsory, since they are examination and we also have the startup sessions for each work package 100% compulsory since we want you to get a good start of each task. On lectures especially the guest lectures we also expect a very high attention and for these you are supposed to attend at least 80% of the occasions.

The course starts the 30/8 09.15 – 11.00 with a compulsory roll-call and course introduction on Zoom (See link below).

A lot of teachers and guest lecturers are involved in the course and we are still working on a more detailed schedule but it will come a new version in a few days.
