Forestry and Woodproduction

The course gives an overview of how forestry is conducted in the Nordic and cover the whole chain from nursery to final cut. The course starts with an overview of forest history during the last 150 years. The current forest situation in Sweden regarding for example volumes of timber, tree species, forest ages and geographic distribution are presented. Other public interests who can affect the forest management and production of wood is presented and discussed. Different forest measures from regeneration to final cut is presented and discussed. Commonly used systems for felling and transports are presented and analyzed. Different types of round-wood at the market are presented together with established forms of trade for forest raw material. The course is mainly based on Lectures and literature studies, but it also contains 3-4 days of study visits aiming to show forestry in practice.

Varmt välkomna till kursen Skogsbruk och virkesproduktion vårterminen 2021. Uppropet blir torsdag 18/2 kl 0915 via Zoom. Jag har mailat ut en Zoom-länk till alla antagna studenter. Har du inte fått länken så hör av dig till mig på anders.lindhagen@slu.se

In i det sista har vi funderat på hur kursen ska anpassas till den rådande pandemin. Alla föreläsningar kommer genomföras digitalt i Zoom och även det seminarium som tidigare var planerat att ske på Campus flyttas till samma digitala plattform. Vidare kommer tentamen genomföras som hemtentamen. Allt detta för att så långt möjligt undvika smittspridning.

I kursen har tidigare år funnits ett fältmoment som krävt obligatorisk närvaro. Fältmimenten har genomförts som en studieresa till skogarna på Östads marker utanför Alingsås. Med de restriktioner som gäller under vårterminen är resan inte genomförbar i sin vanliga form och då studentantalet på kursen ser ut att bli stort är det omöjligt att anpassa den på ett smittsäkert sätt. Det blir även svårt att få till en fältdel nära Uppsala i mindre grupper. Vi kanske kan få till någon mindre sådan övning i slutet av kursen men som det ser ut kommer kursen genomföras helt utan gemensamma fältmoment.

Objectives

The main goal with course is that the students in their former profession will have knowledge of management and production in Swedish forestry.
After approved course the students will be able to:
- Describe forest and forestry in Sweden according to structure of forest owners, forest growth and harvesting.
- Give an overview and analyze the basis for forest production in Sweden
- Give an account of the methods used in Swedish forestry according to forest production, harvesting and transports
- Describe the products forestry deliver to industrial users
- Use basic forestry calculations
- Give an account of how puplic interests, such as recreation and nature conservation affect Swedish forestry.
- Give a written report covering deep understanding of a choosen part from the course broad content

Content

The course starts with an overview of forest history during the last 150 years. The current forest situation in Sweden regarding for example volumes of timber, tree species, forest ages and geographic distribution are presented. Other public interests who can affect the forest management and production of wood is presented and discussed. Different forest measures from regeneration to final cut is presented and discussed. Commonly used systems for felling and transports are presented and analyzed. Different types of round-wood at the market are presented together with established forms of trade for forest raw material. A written report there the students deepens the knowledge within a part of the course content. The course is mainly based on Lectures and literature studies, but it also contains 3 days of compulsory study visits and exercises.

Formats and requirements for examination

Approved examination and exercises as well as an active participating in compulsory parts of the course.
  • If the student fails a test, the examiner may give the student a supplementary assignment, provided this is possible and there is reason to do so.
  • If the student has been granted special educational support because of a disability, the examiner has the right to offer the student an adapted test, or provide an alternative assessment.
  • If changes are made to this course syllabus, or if the course is closed, SLU shall decide on transitional rules for examination of students admitted under this syllabus but who have not yet passed the course.
