Basic mathematics and statistics for biologists

Som agronom eller biolog kan du komma i kontakt med slumpmässiga fenomen, t.ex. osäkerhet hos mätdata. I denna kurs får du en introduktion till hur matematiska modeller kan användas för att dra slutsatser kring insamlade data och modellera dynamiska förlopp i naturen.
I kursen möter du i matematikdelen bl.a. en speciell typ av ekvationer, differentialekvationer, som är användbara för att modellera förlopp som beror av tiden. I statistikdelen presenteras statistiska grundbegrepp och några vanliga statistiska metoder. I regressionsanalys introduceras du till statistisk metodik för att studera samband mellan olika variabler.
Vid praktiskt arbete med data är det viktigt att kunna välja en lämplig metod för ett givet problem, och att kunna utvärdera resultatet från en metod och dra rimliga slutsatser. I kursen arbetar du med frågeställningar kring data i datorövningar med modern statistisk programvara.

Objectives

The purpose of the course is to lay foundations in statistics and mathematics with applications in natural sciences.
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:
-solve elementary equations, calculate derivatives and be familiar with the fondations of integration.
-summarize and illustrate data graphically.
-calculate confidence intervals and to perform hypothesis testing.
-analyse data using one-way ANOVA and simple regression analysis.
-use appropriate statistical program packages to analyse data.

Content

The lectures deal with the theory. The lessons, exercises and computer exercises deal with the practical exercises.

-Mathematics part: polynomials, powers, logarithms, derivatives and integrals.
- Statistics part:descriptive statistics, normal distribution, point estimation, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, regression and analysis of variance.
The course is based on practical examples from various biological applications.

Formats and requirements for examination

-Passed exercises and pass the written and / or oral examination and approved participation in compulsory parts.
-Passed computer exercises.
  • If the student fails a test, the examiner may give the student a supplementary assignment, provided this is possible and there is reason to do so.
  • If the student has been granted special educational support because of a disability, the examiner has the right to offer the student an adapted test, or provide an alternative assessment.
  • If changes are made to this course syllabus, or if the course is closed, SLU shall decide on transitional rules for examination of students admitted under this syllabus but who have not yet passed the course.

Vid slutet av kursen ges en skriftlig tentamen omfattande hela kursinnehållet. Svårighetsgraden på tentamensuppgifterna är varierad. De lättare innebär direkta tillämpningar av de kursavsnitt som framgår av kursens lärandemål, medan de svårare uppgifterna kräver en syntes av kursens olika delar. Eftersom antalet uppgifter på tentamen är begränsat anges inte i förväg på vilka kursavsnitt frågorna ställs.

För att få betyget 3 krävs att studenten erhåller 55 % av det totala antalet poäng på tentamen.
