ObjectivesThe objective of the course is to provide students with knowledge of energy systems, energy conservation and renewable energy sources for energy supply to rural businesses and to small houses in the countryside, and the potential role of agriculture as an energy supplier.
On completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Briefly describe Swedish energy policy and energy consumption by society and rural businesses
- Describe and explain the energy system concept
- Assess different energy systems from a resource perspective
- Describe and evaluate different energy conserving measures in rural businesses, incl. dwellings in the countryside
- Describe and analyse the use of renewable energy types such as bioenergy, heat pumps, wind power, solar energy, small-scale hydro power, etc.
- Assess the potential of agriculture and forestry to produce raw materials for fuel.
ContentThe course is mainly based on lectures and reading of the literature. Students will also have the opportunity to carry out some exercises and study trips, and to participate in seminars. Project work will be carried out in groups and presented orally and in writing. The project work will involve mapping existing energy systems in a rural business or other premises in the countryside and proposing future designs. Oral presentation of project work is compulsory part of the course.
The course includes the following elements:
- Basic concepts and thermodynamics
- Energy consumption and energy resources world-wide
- Environmental impacts, energy analysis, energy conservation and energy planning
- Renewable energy types such as bioenergy, heat pumps, solar energy, wind and water energy, etc.
- Combustion science, heat storage and heat distribution,
- Energy saving measures.
Formats and requirements for examinationA pass grade in reporting of projects and oral presentation of project work and approved assignments.
- If the student fails a test, the examiner may give the student a supplementary assignment, provided this is possible and there is reason to do so.
- If the student has been granted special educational support because of a disability, the examiner has the right to offer the student an adapted test, or provide an alternative assessment.
- If changes are made to this course syllabus, or if the course is closed, SLU shall decide on transitional rules for examination of students admitted under this syllabus but who have not yet passed the course.
- For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline. For more information on this, please refer to the regulations for education at Bachelor's and Master's level.

Additional informationThe majority of the course will consist of studies of the literature, responding to study assignments and performance of exercises and project work. The course will be run as a half distance learning course, with four full days of lectures, study trips and reporting of assignments. The first meeting will be in Alnarp. The second and third meetings will take place approx. 1 and 2 months after the beginning of the course. At a final meeting, assignment and project work will be reported. Otherwise the course will run as a distance learning course via the Internet.
