Objectives

The course teaches the basics of scientific approaches and evidence-based veterinary medicine through literature searches, critical evaluations of scientific literature as well as written and oral presentations and peer reviewing.

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

• critically discuss the contents, results and conclusions of a scientific article and reflect upon how the question and choice of methods relate to the scientific and practical basis of the subject;
• apply the foundations of evidence-based veterinary medicine (EBVM);
• independently find, compile, practise evaluating and critically interpreting relevant information, data and processing of medical statistics based on a formulated question;
• write and present a scientific project following the prevailing practice in the subject, tailored to the given target group and following the instructions provided;
• orally present a scientific project and critically review and provide constructive criticism on another student’s project;
• reflect upon sustainability and ethics in the subject.

Content

The course comprises lectures, exercises and creating a scientific project with supervision. Lectures and exercises address information searches, critically reviewing scientific literature, EBVM, epidemiology, medical statistics, scientific writing and oral presentation. Students practise EBVM through reviewing literature in groups and by studying and critically compiling selected literature in smaller groups. Students create a scientific project in their chosen field based on existing facts presented orally and in writing. They will also provide critical feedback on another student’s project. Supervision will be given in writing groups of four to six students. The majority of group work sessions and writing group meetings are compulsory.

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

Approved written scientific project, approved oral presentation and approved critical review of another student’s project. Approved participation in compulsory components.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
• For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

• The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.

Additional information

The course coordinator and departments will provide topics for the scientific project and appoint supervisors. Written and oral presentations may be given in English.
