Certifying my documents

Last changed: 26 March 2020

Copies that are sent to SLU for assessment of the eligibility for doctoral studies must be certified.

For foreign academic merits

Never submit original documents. Original documents will not be returned. All copies of original documents must be certified as true copies of the original by the issuing institution or a notary public. Irrespective of the language in the document, a Swedish notary public can provide certified copies, for a fee, if you bring the original documents in person.

The admissions office at SLU Ultuna can also certify your copies if you bring the original documents in person. Please write to antagning@slu.se (mark the email with “Certification needed”) and ask for an appointment.

Certified copies must be copies of original documents. Copies of copies will not be accepted.

In order to certify copies, you must present both the original and a copy of the document to the person carrying out the certification. Each copy must be certified separately and clearly indicate:

  • the signature of the certifying officer
  • the stamp of the issuing institution or notary public
  • the name and address or provider/registration number (where applicable) of the certifying officer. This must be printed legibly (possible to read) below the signature or in the stamp. It must be possible for SLU to contact the certifying officer if necessary. A stamp stating only "True copy certified" will not be accepted.

Please observe the following:

  • You must submit a copy of your documents in the original language. If your documents are in a language other than Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, English, French or German, you must also provide a translation. This translation should be in one of the following languages: Swedish, English, French or German.
  • If your degree was awarded in Cameroon, Canada, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria or the USA, your transcript of records must be sent directly from your university to the SLU Registrar, referring to the reference number in the advert. If you send it yourself, it will not be accepted.
  • Certain countries have specific requirements. Please see the specific requirements for your country at www.universityadmissions.se.

If you have questions about the verification process, please contact antagning@slu.se.

For Swedish academic merits

If you have academic merits from a Swedish university, your merits will be verified through either the Swedish national admissions system or through certified copies. If your academic credits are not available in the national admission systems (for example credits awarded before 2007) we require certified copies. If you are in Sweden and have your documents with you, you may follow the instructions below.

Certifying documents implies that a person must certify that the copy corresponds to the original and that there are no differences between them. A person who has seen both the original document and the copy certifies the copy by signing the copy and writing their name and phone number on  it so that SLU can contact them if needed.

Please note that:

  • each copied page must be clearly separately and that SLU must be able to contact the person who has certified the copy if needed;
  • a stamp stating only "True copy certified" will not be accepted;
  • copies of copies will not be accepted;
  • you must submit a copy of your documents in the original language. If your documents are in a language other than Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, English, French or German, you must also provide a translation. This translation should be in one of the following languages: Swedish, English, French or German.
