Thesis and public defence

Last changed: 22 January 2019

Doctoral candidates are required to produce a written thesis, consisting of a summarising chapter and 3-4 papers that have been accepted by or submitted to an international, peer-reviewed scientific journal.  A printed copy of the thesis must be made publicly available before the student's public defence of the thesis.

Each student must defend their thesis in public. This is done in an open seminar with an external reviewer appointed by the faculty board. The external reviewer, who critically examines the thesis, is invited from another university. An examining committee then decides whether to award a Pass or Fail grade.
