Thesis and dissertation

Last changed: 12 October 2017

As part of their PhD studies, students will produce a written thesis, consisting of a synthesis based on three to four papers that should have been accepted by, or at least submitted to, an international scientific journal with a referee system or a monograph.  A printed thesis should be available for public scrutiny before the candidate's public defence.

Each candidate is required to defent their thesis as part of their public defence of the doctoral thesis. This is done in a public seminar with an external reviewer (opponent) appointed by the faculty board. The external reviewer, who critically examines the thesis, is often invited in from another university. An examining committee (betygsnämnd) will decide whether candidates pass or fail.
