Visualising the future – adapting to a changing climate

events | seminars, workshops |

Future Lab webinar: How can climate projections be used to show uncertainties and robust signals in future climates and how can municipalities work pro-actively with future scenarios to mitigate climate-related risks such as urban flooding? Guest speakers are professor Erik Kjellström from SMHI and Helena Björn from Lomma municipality.

How can the future be visualised and how can we use this to adapt? In this Future Lab webinar the changing climate is taken as an example for ways to take on the future. The guest speakers professor Erik Kjellström from SMHI and Helena Björn from Lomma municipality will talk about theoretical climate projections and practical adaptation.

This webinar is part of a series, arranged by the Futures Lab at SLU which is a forum for interdisciplinary explorations of future research questions and societal challenges. The main target audiences are SLU researchers, teachers and students, but anyone interested is welcome to join.

Ishi Buffam, Researcher at the Department of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Management, SLU, moderator

Erik Kjellström, Professor in climatology at the Rossby Centre, SMHI, speaker

Erik Kjellström works on Development of climate models, production and analysis of climate change scenarios are everyday activities at the centre and will be presented in the talk. Examples of future climate change scenarios will also be presented. Another major activity relates to support for climate change impact analysis and work on climate change adaptation. Erik is also a member of the Swedish National Expert Council for Climate Adaptation

Helena Björn, Head of environmental strategy at Lomma Municipality, speaker

Helena Björn has a PhD in Ecology and a wide and long experience in sustainable urban planning. During her years in Lomma, she has been part of developing ocean planning, climate adaptation and ecosystem services in the urban planning at the local, regional and national levels, sometimes also on the international level. The importance of well-functioning ecosystems, and how municipal authorities can contribute to withhold these systems, are the driving forces in Helena Björn’s daily work.

Organisers

SLU Urban Futures is a strategic platform that develops and strengthens transdisciplinary research, education and collaboration in sustainable urban development.

SLU Future Food is a platform for research and collaboration to develop knowledge, solutions and innovations aimed at ensuring that the entire food system is characterized by economic, ecological and social sustainability to overcome tomorrow's challenges. The research addresses both plants and animals, from the smallest molecules to global systems.
