The most intriguing phase in an insect life especially a lepidopteran is, the physiological changes associated with ageing i.e., larval stage to adults. A freshly hatched neonate over-ride host plant defenses and predation risk in order to establish itself in a location with abundant food supply. While adults are determined to increase the fitness to encounter successful mate and eventually locate suitable host plants for their progenies. Interestingly, both larval and adult behaviors are chemically mediated, produced by host plants and conspecific opposite sex. Arguably complex but highly sensitive olfaction in these organisms exhibits weakest link when it comes to develop sustainable pest control strategies.


I am interested in understanding chemically mediated interactions in the larval stages mainly host plant preferences and molecular basis to larval olfaction (odorant receptors) compared to adults.


Using Egyptian cotton leafworm Spodoptera littoralis as a model species, I have been studying behavioral modulation in larva in response to sensory qualities from their host plants.

Current status: Extending the knowledge of larval modulation and host choice behaviors in adults from cotton leafworm to silver Y moth, Autographa gamma, a migratory pest in Sweden infesting sugar beets in Skåne.
