Suvi Kokko

Suvi Kokko
I am a researcher at the Department of Economics. In May 2019 I defended my PhD thesis in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. I also hold a Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and a Bachelor’s degree in International Business Administration from the Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences in Finland.

I am interested in sustainable development and how transformative change can take place and lead to more sustainable societies. In my research, I have applied a variety of methods and theories from decision-making, entrepreneurship, innovation and sciences and technology studies to understand change. My previous work and research have taken me to various countries in East and West Africa, with latest fieldwork conducted in Nairobi, Kenya.

Keywords: social innovation, sustainable development, entrepreneurship, decision-making, cooperation, rural development

I teach in topics such as marketing, social entrepreneurship and quantiative research methods.

My current research involves smart urban food innovations.

My research is of multidisciplinary nature. In my individual work on social entrepreneurship and social innovation, I have for instance brought together three distinct fields of study: methods for quantitatively measuring social values; the contextualisation of social entrepreneurial development and the conceptualisation of transformative social change through a multilevel perspective (MLP).

Within the field of decision-making and agriculture, I have studied farmers’ decision-making in terms of renewal of their farm businesses when encountered by change in the context they operate. This study was in carried out in relation to an evaluation of the effects of the restauration of Lake Hornborgsjön on farming, commissioned by the Swedish EPA (Naturvårdsverket)

I have also interviewed dairy farmers and veterinarians about preventive measures for animal welfare in order to improve animal welfare advisory services. This is an on-going FORMAS financed project Ljuva Juver

During my PhD education I was part of a multidisciplinary team to carry out a pilot study on the challenges reindeer herders face in Northern Sweden.

Since October 2019 I work with cooperation (Samverkan) in issues related to rural development and the green sector. I work part time at the Competence Centrum for Business Management (Kompetenscentrum Företagsledning).  In an on-going cooperation project, Landsbygdsfokus, we  will summarise current research and statistics on rural businesses in Sweden and develop material for capacity building of actors in the support system for rural businesses.
