Sustainable afforestation in Ethiopia under land-use intensification will be investiagated in new project

Published: 12 December 2018

SLU has received 5.5 million SEK from the Swedish Research Council for a project entitled “Market driven afforestation – trajectories in social resilience and environmental sustainability under land-use intensification”. Project leader is Erik Karltun from the Department of Soil and Environment.

The 3-year project is multi-disciplinary and the studies will take place in an area in Ethiopia where farmers are establishing fast growing tree plantations on cropland due an increased demand for wood products. The aim is to study long-term sustainability in the new production systems and how income, food security and the internal distribution of household resources between men and women are affected by the changed production.

The project is a collaboration between the Department for Soil and Environment, Department of Urban and Rural Development, Wondo Genet College of Forestry and Natural Resources and University of Gondar. Erik Karltun (PI) and Jennie Barron participates from the department.
