Published: 15 May 2018

On Tuesday May 8th, a ceremony to honour distinguished foreign students at Swedish universities was arranged in The Hereditary Prince's Palace by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with the Swedish Institute. From SLU Andrea Maria Cantillo Carrero, master student at the MSc program Environmental Communication and Management, won the title "Global Swede 2018".

The award is a sign of Sweden's appreciation of our international students, and meant to inspire the students to act as ambassadors in the relations between their countries and Sweden, and part of a long term vision to strengthen the relations with the community of international students receiving education in Sweden.

The aim is to create networks to strengthen international cooperation and trade. The alumni network Global Swede is part of a bigger network administered by the Swedish Institute consisting of 15 000 people from 140 countries.

All Swedish universities had the opportunity to nominate a student, and from SLU was Andrea Maria Cantillo Carrero, master student at the MSc program Environmental Communication and Management, chosen. Andrea received the award at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from Ann Linde, Minister for EU Affairs and Trade, in the presence of representatives from several Swedish universities, the Director-General of the Swedish Institute Annika Rembe, Head of the Department for Trade Promotion, Nation Branding and CSR at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Camilla Mellander and the ambassadors of the involved countries.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Karin Holmgren presented SLU:s candidate with these words:

"Andrea Maria Cantillo Carrero from the MSc program "Environmental Communication and Management" truly embodies the SLU's idea of education for sustainable life. She has excellent academic performance, is an active student representative and shows great social and environmental engagement. For instance, she is raising awareness about individuals' capacity to mitigate climate change through her Facebook page with 2000 followers. She is always considerate of others' perspectives, which also is evident in her Master thesis aiming at influencing Colombia's environmental management by including many voices."
