Honorary doctor Kerstin Lindblad-Toh

Since her own dissertation, Kerstin Lindblad-Toh has received a number of awards and prizes. At this year's doctoral Award ceremony she will reveive the doctoral hat once again - this time as a honorary doctor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science

Göran Andersson and Tomas Bergström, both researchers at the Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding, were amongst those who nominated Kerstin Lindblad-Toh as a honorary doctor. 

"We and other scientists at SLU have collaborated with Kerstin Lindblad-Toh for a long time. This collaboration has deepened, and today there is a very successful collaboration between the universities within canine research," Göran Andersson comments. 

The collaboration between SLU and Uppsala University has resulted in several large international projects. Kerstin Lindblad-Toh was one of the scientistst who took initiative to the EU-financed project LUPA which involves both animal geneticists and veterinary medical clinics at SLU. She has even led a Formas-financed centre of excellence where scientists from SLU participated.

Göran Andersson motivates the nomination:

"Kerstin Lindblad-Toh is a unique talent and her scientific work has translated into practical applications within both veterinary and human health care. She has made a number of groundbreaking contributions within animal genetics, for example identification of several genetic mutations that cause hereditary disease in dogs and horses."

Kerstin Lindblad-Toh is awarded the title of honorary doctor at this year's doctoral award ceremony on the 5th of October and gives her installment lecture on 4th of October.  

Facts:

  • Kerstin Lindblad-Tohis professor of comparative genomcis at Uppsala University and a distinguished professor at the Swedish Research Council. 
  • She is also the scientific director of Vertebrate Genomcis at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard University, Cambridge, USA.
  • From 2010 to 2013 she has been the the director of SciLifeLab Uppsala, from 2013 - 2016 co-director.
