Short summary
Bluetongue virus serotype 3 (BTV-3) was detected for the first time in Sweden in September 2024 and spread rapidly among ruminants such as cows and sheep. The project aims to rapidly collect samples and data during the ongoing outbreak.
Background
Bluetongue virus serotype 3 (BTV-3) was detected for the first time in Sweden in September 2024 and spread rapidly among ruminants such as cows and sheep.
About this project
The project aims to quickly collect samples and data during the ongoing outbreak, as important information may otherwise be lost when animals become immune after natural infection or vaccination.
The focus is on understanding the spread of infection, the effects of the disease on animal health and fertility, and the role of the vector (midges) – even during winter.
We will secure samples from malformed calves and PCR-positive animals to investigate how long they can carry the infection. Vector activity during the winter will be studied, as will the virus's impact on fertility.
By securing this material, the research can contribute to better preparedness, infection control, and advice during the current outbreak, but also in future outbreaks of BTV-3 and similar vector-borne diseases.
Collaborations
The project is being carried out in collaboration between SLU, SVA, Gård & Djurhälsan, and Växa Sverige.
