Bibliometrics is a set of methods for quantitative analysis of scientific publications.

Bibliometric analyses

Bibliometric methods are used for e.g. evaluation of research and allocation of research funds, on both national and international levels, as well as within individual institutions. Bibliometric indicators are most often based on number of publications and number of citations, as measures of scientific productivity and scientific impact.

Major research funders use bibliometric analyses for monitoring of grant contributions and sometimes also in the evalutaion of project applications (see Guidelines for using bibliometrics at the Swedish Research Council ). Some university rankings are based on bibliometric data.

At SLU bibiliometrics is used for e.g. follow-up, allocation of funds and collaboration analyses. The analyses are mainly based on data from SLU:s publication database (SLUpub) and InCites (Clarivate Analytics). InCites is a tool for analysis using advanced indicators (normalized values). In the Annual Report of SLU  you can find examples of analyses and in Operational Planning and Financial Allocation  a description of the publication based performance driven segment in the university's present allocation procedure for funds to the departments.

The information used for bibliometric analyses is in many cases based on the affiliation information of the authors as it its written in publication. Because of this it is very important that the name of the university is always given in a consistent way.

At SLU there is a decision from the Vice-Chancellor which states  how the name of the university shall be given in publications. Always provide your affiliation information as stated in the decision.
