Quality assessment of stored onions

This is a PhD project, financed by BT, which has been going on for 1 year. The project aims to develop methods to measure the quality of stored onions, in order to reduce waste caused as onions become diseased or sprout. Methods include measuring the contents of various sugars and minerals, hardness, and using odor sampling and image analysis to identify sprouting and diseased onions. The diseases in focus are bacterial soft rot (Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum), Fusarium basal rot (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepae) and blue mold (Penicillium polonicum).
