Kursen använder landskapsteori som verktyg för kritisk granskning och fördjupad förståelse för planering, särskilt landskapsplanering. Den diskuterar centrala begrepp och metoder i landskapsplanering, med exempel på hur det praktiseras.
Kursen är baserad på litteraturseminarier i kombination med föreläsningar och workshops. I kursen ingår att skriva en uppsats där en av de teorier eller begrepp som diskuteras i kursen studeras mer ingående.

Syftet med denna avancerade kurs är att studenten ska få en djupare förståelse för landskapsplanering.

Innehåll
Även den mest pragmatiska landskapsplaneraren använder begrepp och teorier som en bas för sitt arbete - även om det inte nödvändigtvis sker på ett medvetet sätt. Denna kurs argumenterar för att en förbättrad förmåga att analysera och ifrågasätta rådande idéer och teorier (egna eller andras) om vad landskap och landskapsplanering är, förbättrar hur landskapsplanering praktiseras.
Kursen använder landskapsteori som utgångspunkt för kritik och fördjupad förståelse för planering, speciellt landskapsplanering. Kursen diskuterar teorier, nyckelbegrepp och metoder i landskapsplanering, med exempel på hur det praktiseras. Samtida praktik samt historiska exempel används för att studera flera möjliga sätt att förstå centrala begrepp inom fältet (t.ex. landskap, natur, rummet och platsen), vilket i sin tur påverkar hur landskapsplaneringen förstås och praktiseras. Kursen tar upp hur teorier om landskap kan begränsa, eller underlätta, vissa planeringslösningar. Analysen av nutidspraxis öppnar också för en diskussion om vad landskapsplanering är och kan vara.
Kursens arbete fokuserar på landskapsplanering i praktiken, medan dess teoretiska och metodiska diskussioner har en större bredd. Kursen ger kunskap om hur man kritiskt granskar teorier, begrepp och representationer inom landskapsarkitektur och planering. Sådana granskningar, menar vi, är grunden för en aktiv och medveten planering i praktiken.
Kursen är baserad på litteraturseminarier i kombination med föreläsningar och workshops. I slutet av kursen skrivs en uppsats där en av de teorier eller begrepp som diskuteras i kursen studeras i detalj. Denna uppsats ger möjlighet att börja tänka och arbeta på en teoretisk ram för efterföljande examensarbete.
Kursen innehåller seminarier om landskapet inom landskapsplanering, kartografins roll och andra visuella verktyg inom planeringen, idéer om naturen inom landskapsplanering och hur det påverkat praktiken, landskap i förhållande till planeringsteori och ett seminarium om en aktuell diskurs inom planeringen. Seminarier, övningar och aktiviteter som är kopplade till dessa är obligatoriska.

Godkänt deltagande i seminarier, föreläsningar och workshops. Godkända individuella presentationer av en text vid ett seminarium, godkänd skriftlig sammanfattning av litteraturen och diskussionerna för några av seminarierna, godkänd uppsats samt godkända obligatoriska aktiviteter.
- Om studenten inte blivit godkänd på ett prov har examinatorn rätt att ge en kompletteringsuppgift – om det finns skäl för det och om det är möjligt.
- Om studenten har ett beslut från SLU om särskilt pedagogiskt stöd på grund av funktionsnedsättning, har examinatorn rätt att ge ett anpassat prov eller låta studenten genomföra provet på ett alternativt sätt.
- Om denna kursplan ändras, eller om kursen läggs ner, ska SLU besluta om övergångsregler för examination av studenter, som antagits enligt denna kursplan och ännu inte blivit godkända.
- För examination av självständigt arbete (examensarbete) gäller dessutom att examinatorn kan tillåta studenten att göra kompletteringar efter inlämningsdatum. Mer information finns i utbildningshandboken

Formalities
The paper's length should be roughly 10–15 pages (including the reference list and optional images), with no less than 3 000 and no more than 5 000 words (excluding the reference list). The paper should be written in English; only by way of exception and after discussion with your supervisor in Swedish.
Structure
We are not too strict in terms of the structure of the paper, but to make sure you don't get stuck on how to structure the paper we would argue the paper should have (at least) the following sections in this order:
- Introduction (in which the questions or aims with the paper is clearly stated),
- a section that introduces the theory and/or methods used,
- a section which presents and discusses the empirical material studied (“empirical material” can range from concrete landscapes, via plans, policies and programmes, to interview material, newspaper articles, academic literature—depending on your interest and the aims of your paper),
- a final section in which you return to the questions and sums up the findings (Discussion and/or Conclusion),
- References.
There might be reasons to divert from this structure, but if that is the case, please discuss it with your supervisor.
Content
In the paper you are asked to apply the theoretical discussions from the course literature, the lectures, and the workshops on a specific case. The case could be, for instance, a specific place, a plan, an interview, or a (limited) discourse. Since the empirical study as such is not the main focus, it is advisable to choose a limited case, or perhaps to study a project or a place which you are already familiar with. Your supervisor will help you to limit the case.
The paper should illustrate your ability to use the concepts and theories discussed in the course. Please make sure to explicitly refer to the course literature (and the recommended literature) in your paper. We don't expect that you use all the literature, but we do expect that you use at least a few texts, in an informed manner.
Supervision
We will supervise you most likely in smaller groups and/or individually, with approximately one meeting per week. The dates and time will be decided by the supervisor and communicated at the beginning of the course's second phase.
Grading criteria
The requirements for attaining different grades are described below. The scale of grades is as follows: 5: Pass with distinction, 4: Pass with credit, 3: Pass, U: Fail
