Avancerad Landskapsanalys med GIS

The course works in partnership with current research projects to offer large amounts of realistic supporting data for student projects, which can be carried out individually or in groups. The objective is for the students to look for new angles of approach in analysis and presentation of the material. The work will also include classical analyses such as sight analysis and analyses prior to wind power establishments. In addition to a number of thematic and general lectures on data and analytical methods, the researchers from the various research projects will also provide subject-specific lectures. Emphasis is placed on the theory of landscape analysis and the theory of digital methods and techniques associated with GIS. The course concludes with a poster display of the students’ projects.

Information från kursledaren

The recent Covid restrictions on number of persons per room and the large number of applicants to ADLA has required reorganisation of the room schedule accross several courses. A schedule will be made available as soon as the room bookings are settled. /Neil

Update 21/12 : We currently believe we will be able to provide a machine in a computer lab for every student taking the course. In order to comply with Covid safety rules this will be spread accross several labs on campus (which TBC). However all supervision will be online via Zoom so if you have the right kind of computer equipment it should be possible to take the course entirely from home (please note “should” we have never tried this before and GIS software is notoriously temperamental).

The minimum requirements to run ArcMap are here : https://desktop.arcgis.com/en/arcmap/10.3/get-started/system-requirements/arcgis-engine-system-requirements. However I would suggest that you really need 8Gb of RAM, preferably 16Gb or some processes will be very slow. A large computer screen and a mouse also make things more practical. I also recommend a fixed internet connection to ensure Zoom works well.

Update 22/12 : A provisional timetable is now available on these pages. Computer rooms will be confirmed when this information becomes available.

Update 13/01 :

The Course timeable can be also be found here:

The course Canvas page will be published on Friday, including zoom details. The introduction will be via zoom at at 13.00 on Monday 18th January in Zoom Room 1. A welcome email will also be sent on Monday morning containing the Zoom details to those who have registered their email address.

Please note: SLU has tightened Covid restrictions such that, rather than being optional as previously, all students who can work from home must do so (see details above for technical requirements of ArcGIS). Students who are not able to work from home will be able to work from the computer labs at Alnarp but must request this from me in advance.

Please watch the introductory lecture on Monday from home (Zoom is available for most devices). Computer labs will be assigned on Monday following the introduction. /Neil

Update 15/01

- The Canvas pages are now available, so from now on all updates will be made via Canvas. You should recieve an email to register with Canvas if you have accepted a place on the course.

- All students should now have recieved a welcome email with a Zoom link for the lecture on Monday. Please email me if you have not recieved such an email.

- Its has come to my attention that some of the literature on geodesign is currently only available as physical books at SLU Alnarp library, I have ordered e-books which will be available by the time we reach that exercise.

See you on Monday! /Neil
