Landscape Architecture Theory, Methodology & Practice

Kursen innehåller föreläsningar, litteraturseminarium med muntlig presentation och/eller skriftliga reflektioner över studerad litteratur, samt övningsuppgifter som utförs både individuellt och i grupp.


Övningsuppgifterna kan exempelvis utgöras av fallstudier där studenterna analyserar ett genomfört projekt utifrån studerade teorier samt diskuterar och föreslår metod för en hypotetisk fallstudie av projektet.


Kursens litteratur behandlar viktiga teoribildningar inom landskapsarkitekturen från historiska texter till samtida diskurser.


Föreläsningar som ges inom ramen för kursen avser att introducera teoribildningar och metoder som används inom landskapsarkitekturen.


Av särskild vikt är kritiskt tänkande och användandet av grafiska representationer såsom skisser, foto, diagram, ritningar etc. som komplement till det skriva och talade ordet.

Learning Outcome

After completion of the course the student should be able to:

Understand theories and concepts in landscape architecture (1).

Discuss major fields of landscape architecture research, their methodology and relation to other disciplines (2).

Elaborate practical implications from theories in landscape architecture and discuss main theoretical viewpoints in today's practice in landscape architecture and its relation to sustainability. (4)

Reflect on a personal approach in the field of landscape architecture and future professional role. (5)

Discuss key theories and case studies of landscape architecture history in Sweden and internationally; critically relate these knowledges to the development of modern society. (3)

Propose relevant methods and methodologies for studies in landscape architecture research. (7)

Decode contemporary landscapes and reflect on them from a personal point of view concerning studied theories, propose relevant methods and methodologies for studies in landscape architecture research. (6)

Assessment forms

Lectures with full attendance (no differentiation of grade, 10 % of the grade).

Literature seminars with written or oral reflections on literature.

(30% of the grade)

Practice visits & reports.

Ability to paraphrase concepts, theories, and methods in assigned literature.

Practice report:

Ability to paraphrase information conveyed during the visit.

Ability to describe background and context of assigned case and chosen topical focus. Ability to reflect on the task and to communicate the result in a structured and clear way, both graphically and orally.

Literature seminar:

Ability to discuss concepts, theories, and methods in assigned literature.

Practice report:

Ability to discuss the everyday situation at the workplace, how method and theory come into play at the office.

Ability to describe and discuss background and context of assigned case and chosen topical focus. Ability to critically reflect on the task in an insightful and transparent way and to communicate the result in a structured and clear way, both graphically and orally.
