Occupational Health and Safety in Agriculture and Horticulture

The course will consist of lectures and group discussions on a 3-day intensive course, a literature seminar and a written exercise based on the course literature and selected research articles. Lectures and group discussion will be scheduled on full time (ca 9 – 16) on a 3-day course. The literature seminar and written exercise will be scheduled after the 3-day course. A detailed schedule will be available 2 month before the course start.

The lectures will present and discuss fundamental aspects of occupational health and safety in agriculture and horticulture, the demographics of the agricultural and horticultural work force, risk populations and injury statistics, general health of farmers and farm workers, musculoskeletal disorders and ergonomics and associated risk factors, physical occupational risk factors,

chemical hazards and pesticides, respiratory health among farmers, zoonotic diseases as a risk factor and possible preventive measures, psychosocial work environment, mental health and stress, good leadership and a healthy work place, agricultural and horticultural related legislations in EU and Sweden, injury prevention and interventions, safe handling of animals and machinery for farmers’ safety and Nordic and international perspectives on health and safety in agriculture and horticulture.

Invited and SLU researchers will present their own work and the latest research in the field. The literature seminar will be onclass discussion of the participants´ written exercises based on a literature study.

Mål

This course addresses health and safety challenges and injury prevention among farmers, their employees and farm family members. These challenges are looked upon from a Nordic and international perspective.

The aim of the course is to give the PhD students:

- A profound introduction and a theoretical background on the topic occupational health and safety (OHS) in

agriculture and horticulture based on the latest research findings.

- Provide hands-on best practices in the field of agricultural and horticultural OHS issues.

- Give attention to healthy and safe behavior resilient to work processes and work environment.

- Help PhD students to understand what OHS in agriculture and horticulture means in a wider context.

An important goal is also to give the PhD students the opportunity to network, exchange experiences and knowledge, and to interact with some of the best researchers in the field. On completion of the course, the postgraduate student will have more profound scientific knowledge about occupational health and safety, methods and measures to prevent injuries and diseases in

agricultural and horticultural settings.

Examinationsformer och fordringar för godkänd kurs

Active participation in lectures and group discussions on the scheduled 3-day course. The written exercise will consist of a short literature review based on the course literature and peer review articles including critical reflections of the literature.

Presentation and discussion of the individual exercise on a literature seminar.

Ytterligare information

Deadline for registration is 1st of July, 2019

- A student who has been admitted to and registered on a course is entitled to receive teaching and/or supervision only

for the course date he/she was admitted to.

- A student who for special reasons is unable to participate in compulsory elements, is entitled an opportunity to

recover those elements during a course given at a later date. More information is available in the regulations for

education.
