Occupational Health and Safety in Agriculture and Horticulture

The course will consist of lectures and group discussions on a 3-day intensive course, a literature seminar and a written exercise based on the course literature and selected research articles. Lectures and group discussion will be scheduled on full time (ca 9 – 16) on a 3-day course. The literature seminar and written exercise will be scheduled after the 3-day course. A detailed schedule will be available 2 month before the course start.

The lectures will present and discuss fundamental aspects of occupational health and safety in agriculture and horticulture, the demographics of the agricultural and horticultural work force, risk populations and injury statistics, general health of farmers and farm workers, musculoskeletal disorders and ergonomics and associated risk factors, physical occupational risk factors,

chemical hazards and pesticides, respiratory health among farmers, zoonotic diseases as a risk factor and possible preventive measures, psychosocial work environment, mental health and stress, good leadership and a healthy work place, agricultural and horticultural related legislations in EU and Sweden, injury prevention and interventions, safe handling of animals and machinery for farmers’ safety and Nordic and international perspectives on health and safety in agriculture and horticulture.

Invited and SLU researchers will present their own work and the latest research in the field. The literature seminar will be onclass discussion of the participants´ written exercises based on a literature study.
