Learning outcomes

After the course students will be able to:

a) describe and apply relevant landscape governance and management theories within organizational and academic contexts.

b) reflectively argue for, design and perform case studies of various aspects of landscape governance and management

c) describe their own research projects in relation to the landscape governance and management scientific knowledge field, and methodologically as a case study

The overall objective of this PhD course is to discuss and analyze how to apply landscape governance and management as a scientific field, based on a case study approach into the students own research projects. This is based on reading and discussing contemporary literature.

A secondary objective is to give PhD students further insights and inspiration to contemporary theories and methodologies coupled with examples from international research projects and practice. Inputs will be discussed and elaborated in relation to the PhD students’ own research.

First, the course will give an introduction to the context in which studies of landscape governance and management are relevant today. Secondly, it will provide an orientation on theories related to public administration and specifically public governance approaches related to landscape management and citizen engagement. Third, the course will present and discuss case study research methodological approaches related to both singly case study research and multiple case study approaches. Lastly, the course will engage the students in contemporary research approaches to studying landscape governance and management, including connections to their own projects.

The objectives are met by critically reading, and with academic perspectives discuss, identify and formulate relevant challenges while reflecting on contemporary texts.

The course will invite students from SLU and other Nordic countries as well as internationally. Relations will be particularly related to PhD students at SLU Landscape and ongoing NordForsk funded research projects (NordGreen and SMARTer Greener Cities), and EU funded projects (CONEXUS with EU and Southern American perspectives and REGREEN with EU and Chinese perspectives).

This four day PhD course will build on a combination of own readings of relevant literature, lectures from leading academics, directly relating to the literature, discussions with lecturers, as well as essays reflecting the PhD students own work to the literature, lectures and discussions.

Pedagogical form

The course will be planned to be held as a physical workshop, but can even be held on-line should the circumstances require so.

The four-day program will be divided into lectures, presentations of own work and reflections, discussions in plenum, as well as basis for developing individual essays to be handed in and assessed after the course.
