The aim of the workshop series is to create possibility for PhD students in plant breeding to get an overview of some modern methods applied in plant breeding, in order to help choice of methods when planning research projects. Methods that will be taken up are a) genome selection, a tool for predicting genetic value of breeding lines based on genome-wide marker data; b) association
mapping, a method for mapping quantitative trait loci for selection of genotypes closely resembling the phenotype; and c) genome editing, a method for specifically targeted genetic modifications.
Advantages and limitations of the methods for plant breeding as well as ethical issues will be discussed.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student shall be able to
have knowledge about advantages and limitations of some modern plant breeding methods
choose between methods when planning research project
Innehåll
The course is given as a series of three workshops held online and spread over time, a form suggested by PhD students. Every workshop consists of presentations giving a theoretical background of the method and examples of applications, followed by a group discussion related to case studies and own projects. Literature will be available beforehand in a Canvas room.

Every time at 8.30-12 online via Zoom.
To pass the course, a PhD student will have participated in three workshops, and written a reflection of methods in relation to one’s own project.
It is fine to participate in one or more workshops, but in order to get credit points, participation in all three workshops is needed.
