Workshop series II- Methods in modern plant breeding
Topics that will be taken up are a) Plant breeding, an overview of what is meant by plant breeding today in theory and in practice; b) Phenotyping, development of methods for screening plant material in breeding programmes; and c) Product quality, examples of how the latest methods evaluating raw material and end-use product quality can be applied in plant breeding in order to achieve desirable traits in crop plants. The theme will give an overview on current, emerging and future tools that will positively contribute to breeding of important crops.

The aim of the workshop series is to create possibility for PhD students in plant breeding to get an overview of some modern methods applied in plant breeding, in order to help choice of methods when planning research projects. Learning outcomes: After completing the course, the student will be able to - have knowledge about advantages and limitations of some modern plant breeding methods, - choose between methods when planning research project.Innehåll

Pedagogical formThe course is given as a series of three workshops held online and spread over time, a form suggested by PhD students. Every workshop consists of presentations giving a theoretical background of the method and examples of applications, followed by a group discussion. Literature will be available beforehand in a Canvas room. One can choose to participate in one or more workshops, but in order to get credit points, participation in all three workshops is needed.
Preliminary timeplan
The series consists of three workshops given online via Zoom during autumn 2022, each workshop counting for half a day scheduled time and approximately one day non-scheduled time for reading, and at last, half day for writing.
Examination
To pass the course, a PhD student have participated in three workshops, and written a reflection of methods in relation to one’s own project.
