PNS0197 Practical and pedagogical skills in vascular plant field biology, 3,0 Hp

Mål

This field course explores the vascular plant flora of central Sweden. Around 400–450 species will be demonstrated in the field and their habitat and ecology will be discussed. In addition to train keying out species with the help of floras participants will also collect and prepare herbarium specimens and give them to the herbarium UPS at Uppsala University. Pedagogic methods in teaching of species knowledge will be discussed and each person will perform an inventory project, which he/she will present orally for the other participants. The need of persons with species knowledge to achieve a sustainable society will be discussed as well as how conservation biology species (regionally or nationally protected species, species of special concern, red-listed species, signal species, typical species, keystone-species), and invasive species can be used in teaching.

Innehåll

The course is composed of two parts. In a first prepatory part, the students should read assigned litterature and compile a topic summary in preparation of the second part. In the second part of the course (August 9-14) at the field station Tovetorp in Södermanland, there will be excursions during day-time and teacher-led lectures combined with student presentations and hands-on exercises in e.g. case studies during evenings,
