Infection and Reproduction
The course will contain lectures and laborations focussing on in vitro
and cellular aspects of infection and reproduction. Techniques
involved and taught to the students will include cell culture, immunological techniques, fluorescence microscopy and flow
cytometry. Laborations will contain cell culture, infections of cell lines with viruses, immunostaining and visualisation by fluorescent microscopy. Laborations on different aspects of sperm quality will also be performed. These will include evaluating membrane integrity
using SYBR‐14/PI staining followed by flow cytometry, performing the sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA) using acridine orange staining evalauted by flow cytometry, and determining the mitochondrial membrane potential of the spermatozoa using the stain JC-1. The course will contain 16 h lectures, 40 h laborations and 24 h own studies.

quality, such as membrane integrity, mitochondrial membrane potential and chromatin integrity.
- be able to use the results from the methods decribed above to
make a fertility prediction.
- be able to display basic knowledge of the methodology and
reagents needed for cell culture, virus isolation and virus detection by immunofluorescence.
