Coastal and Sea Areas programme

The programme for environmental monitoring and assessment Coastal and Sea Areas at SLU gathers SLU's expertise on marine environments and their assessment with special emphasis on fish and shellfish stocks and communities. The programme has a strong international dimension and includes more than sixty projects and activities, including, for example, environmental monitoring and analyses, marine spatial planning, ecosystem-based management, and advice and analyses for fish and fisheries.

  • Databases

The Department of Aquatic Resources (SLU Aqua) collects, evaluates, stores and makes available data on fish and fishing. The information forms the basis for management, but is also used as research data and other reference data. On behalf of the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, we are data hosts for sample fishing data within national and regional environmental monitoring. We collect data for internationally coordinated stock assessment within the EU Data Collection Framework (DCF).
  • Environmental monitoring and data collection

Environmental monitoring is the first link in the environmental analysis chain – from field data collection to analysis, interpretation, and advice. The Department of Aquatic Resources (SLU Aqua) collects data on fish and shellfish in lakes, rivers, coastal areas and marine waters. Through standardised methods and long-term data series, we generate the knowledge required to understand changes with fish stocks and the environment.
  • Species observations

We gather information from private persons as well as various authorities and institutions concerning the occurrence and distribution of Swedish species. The most important tool for this is Artportalen, a Swedish Species Observation System.
  • The Swedish Taxonomy Initiative

A unique project with the purpose to identify and describe all species of animals, plants and fungi in Sweden, prioritizing lesser known species and organism groups.
