In connection to medical treatments performed at SLU University Animal Hospital, we process the pet owner's personal data. This is done, amongst other things, to be able to keep records of treatments that has been conducted, contact the pet owner, make payment charges, etc. Here, you can read more about how and why we process your personal data.

Data controller

Purpose

SLU University Animal Hospital (abbreviated in Swedish: UDS) collects personal data of animal owners in order to be able to keep a record of treatments performed where contact information for the animal owner is needed for communication, etc. UDS also needs personal data for payment charges, including invoice.

SLU also uses UDS records in veterinary medicine research and educational activities. In these cases, your personal data is used in principle exclusively for contact with you as an animal owner when necessary, for example as follow up after treatment.

SLU will also process your personal data in the ways required for SLU to comply with the rules regarding public documents and government archives.

Legal basis

Animal health care personnel are obliged to keep records of treatments performed. In addition to treatments performed, the records must also include animal and animal owner information (SJVFS 2017:22). The legal basis is therefore that SLU must fulfill a legal obligation.

SLU shall also conduct research and education in veterinary medicine. (SFS 1993:221). The legal basis for this is therefore that SLU shall fulfill a task of public interest.

Access to personal data 

UDS will disclose personal data to partners who are involved in animal hospital activities. These include, for example, animal insurance companies, other animal hospitals and clinics in connection with referrals, pharmacies, external laboratories, etc.

In addition, UDS is obliged to disclose information in connection to a law or regulation, for example reporting notifiable diseases to the Swedish Board of Agriculture.

If a confidentiality assessment shows that confidentiality does not apply, SLU may disclose your personal data to anyone requesting a public/official document.

Storing personal data 

Your personal data will be stored for as long as required by the legislation on public documents and government archives, i.e. 10 years. SLU's rules for storing material that may be used in research states that it should be stored for an additional 10 years, i.e. for a total of 20 years.

Your rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

As an individual, your rights are defined in the General Data Protection Regulation. You have the right to request to access, rectifie, erase and request that the processing of your personal data be restricted. In certain cases, you have the right to object to SLU's processing of your personal data. If you want to exercise any of these rights, contact dataskydd@slu.se.
