At the Airway Clinic (respiratory clinic), we accept horses with both infectious and non-infectious respiratory diseases, as well as horses with reduced performance.
Broad expertise and advanced equipment
Inflammatory airway diseases in horses are, after orthopedic problems, the most common cause of reduced performance in horses living in stable environments. Some horses can experience severe asthma-like symptoms while others only have milder inflammation that affects their performance. At the respiratory clinic, various diagnostic tools are used to identify different subgroups of equine asthma and we can thus individualize treatment.
Stopping the spread of respiratory diseases in horses and in stables
Despite solid infection control efforts, outbreaks of contagious viral and bacterial respiratory infections in horses occur annually in Sweden. In order to create a basis for controlling contagious respiratory diseases and to stop the spread of infection, the specialist clinic offers modern diagnostic tools together with clinical and epidemiological expertise. We have the opportunity to test and treat horses with contagious diseases in isolation wards, as well as provide advice for infection control at home.
We have the opportunity to examine with a so-called working endoscope for horses that show symptoms of reduced performance and/or noises during riding/driving. We have a surgical team that is involved in the event of a need for surgery in the upper respiratory tract.
