The Specialist Clinic for Ophthalmology is the University Animal Hospital's highly specialized eye clinic for horses, dogs and cats. The clinic is run in collaboration with the Department of Clinical Sciences and the veterinarians who work here are specialists and active researchers in the field.
When is a vet needed?
If you suspect an injury or disease in the eyes, it is important to contact a vet for examination, as even seemingly simple injuries can result in permanent vision loss if not treated correctly. You should seek care if your animal shows symptoms of pain such as squinting and/or increased tearing, as well as if there is swelling around the eye. Other symptoms that should prompt a vet examination are abnormal color changes in any part of the eye and, especially, if you suspect that the animal is having vision problems.
Our expertise
Our eye veterinarians and nurses have special expertise in caring for and treating everything from simple to very serious eye diseases and injuries in all animal species. The University Animal Hospital, together with the Department of Clinical Sciences, operates an eye clinic with special equipment to diagnose and treat eye injuries and diseases in the various parts of the eye.
Our operating room is well equipped with operating microscopes for advanced microsurgery and equipment for cataract surgery. The specialist clinic also has expertise in ophthalmology (screening for hereditary diseases in dogs and cats) and special examinations such as examinations of the function of the retina and visual pathways, e.g. through electroretinography (ERG) and visual evoked potentials (VEP).
At SLU, there is ongoing research in eye diseases and various treatment methods. This means that there may be opportunities to participate in projects regarding diagnostics, and take part of new methods and treatments for eye diseases.
