Education, Research, and Advanced Veterinary Care – Hand in Hand

At our hospital, education, research, and advanced veterinary care go hand in hand. We educate the veterinarians and veterinary nurses of tomorrow while providing first-class care for companion animals, performance animals, and livestock.

Sweden’s Only University Animal Hospital

SLU University Animal Hospital in Uppsala is Sweden’s only university animal hospital. We have extensive experience and several of the country’s leading specialists work here. Our facilities include the latest veterinary medical equipment, Sweden’s largest diagnostic imaging department for veterinary medicine, and a world-class clinical pathology laboratory. We are also driven by the passion to constantly improve—to go further, perform better, and give that little extra, both to the animals and their owners.

By combining established knowledge with the latest research results, we continuously drive development forward. With better diagnostics, we can detect diseases earlier. With deeper knowledge, we can help prevent breed-related diseases and contribute to breeding healthier animals. And with increasingly efficient veterinary care, we can offer better treatment options.

Our History

The University Animal Hospital at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala was established on January 1, 2007. The hospital’s operations had existed long before that, but were previously spread across several departments within SLU.

In June 2014, UDS moved into its new facilities at the Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science Centre (VHC). The new hospital covers 18,500 square meters and offers state-of-the-art technology and optimal conditions for providing world-class veterinary care.

Since January 1, 2024, UDS has been part of the Department of Clinical Sciences at SLU. Integration with the academic environment strengthens the synergy between research, education, and clinical practice. It improves the working environment for our staff, and enhances long-term competence development.

Our Facilities

Since 2014, the University Animal Hospital has been located in the Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science Centre (VHC) in Ultuna, just south of Uppsala. The building houses not only the hospital but also university classrooms and research laboratories. The facilities include modern treatment and operating rooms and excellent conditions for safely caring for horses, dogs, cats, and other companion animals.

A Safer, Calmer Experience

A sense of safety and calm is important for both animal owners and staff—and our facilities are designed with this in mind. For example, we have separate waiting areas for dogs and cats, and smaller units for horses so they are not disturbed by each other. The architects have carefully selected materials that reduce noise and distractions, creating an atmosphere of calm and tranquility throughout.

The furniture is specially designed to promote a relaxed environment. For example, the sofas in the dog waiting area are S-shaped to give each dog a sense of privacy. In the cat waiting area, furniture is designed so that the cat carrier can be placed at the same height as the owner.

For horse owners, the distance between the reception, day stables, and treatment rooms is short, ensuring efficient care and minimal transport. For staff, proximity to the laboratory and imaging departments facilitates collaboration and interaction. We also have two trot-up lanes, enabling parallel lameness evaluations.
