At our Medicine Department, we examine and treat animals with conditions related to internal medicine. This includes diseases of the liver, urinary tract and intestines. We perform all types of medical examinations and offers high-quality intensive care.

The Small Animal Medicine Department

At the Small Animal Medicine Department, we handle internal medical conditions in dogs and cats, among others. Animals with diseases of the liver, urinary tract, gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, blood and hormone-forming organs, and infectious diseases are examined and treated here.

Many diseases can cause similar symptoms, which sometimes can make it difficult to make a sure diagnosis. At the Small Animal Medicine Department, each patient is entitled to a structured, step-by-step diagnosis process to arrive at a diagnosis or present the most likely explanation for the animal's problem. In connection with this, treatments that may be able to cure, inhibit or alleviate the disease are also presented. The department receives both patients from the SLU University Animal Hospital and animals referred from other veterinary clinics. We perform various types of medical examinations and offers high-quality intensive care.

The Equine Medicine Department

The Equine Medicine Department examines and treats horses with conditions related to internal medicine. We perform all types of medical examinations and offer high-quality intensive care.

Examinations

The department carries out all types of medical examinations. We welcome horses to investigate, for example, emaciation, fever, cough, heart problems, abnormal respiratory noise during exercise, recurrent colic episodes, prolonged diarrhea, urination difficulties or abnormal fatigue. We recieve both horses from SLU University Animal Hospital as well as patients sent from other veterinary clinics.

We investigate issues in all subject areas, such as intestines, heart and metabolic diseases. At our specialist health care clinics, we also offer care in, for example, respiratory and skin diseases. We also work with advanced diagnostics and together with our specialists in radiology, pathology and clinical chemistry, we can offer you and your horse a high-quality assessment.

We also handle acute medical disease problems in horses. For example, colic, severe diarrhea, infectious diseases, esophageal constipation, various foal diseases and feverish conditions.

Upon your arrival to us, the veterinarian will take your horse's medical history. You will be asked to tell us about the horse's problem and answer questions related to the situation. Please inform us if the horse has been treated with any medications for the current problem. If you have been referred from another veterinary clinic, we will go through the referral together.

After noting the medical history, the veterinarian will perform a basic examination. This examination will assess the horse's general condition, circulation and intestinal motility, among other things. The veterinarian will also listen to the horse's heart and lungs. Based on the horse's medical history and what the veterinarian can see during the basic examination, a diagnostic plan will then be made. Blood tests may be taken to check the horse's general health status.

Additional examinations may be needed, depending on your horse's situation. It is difficult to know in advance which examinations may be relevant for your horse. Sometimes the answer to one examination can determine whether another examination is necessary or not. In some cases, the horse needs to be admitted to our Inpatient Care Department while waiting for test results or to be able to observe the horse for a period of time. Time-consuming or advanced examinations always require the horse to be admitted to our Inpatient Care Department.

As the owner, you will be continuously updated on how the examination is progressing and we always have an open dialogue about what is considered best for your particular horse and situation.
