At the SLU University Animal Hospital's Surgery Department, we perform many different types of surgical procedures on horses, cats and dogs, among others.
Our staff possesses both extensive expertise and experience in surgery – from routine procedures such as castration to more advanced operations such as eye surgery. Using modern equipment and the latest research, we ensure that our surgical care is of high quality.
The Small Animal Surgery Department
At the small animal surgery department, we welcome animals such as dogs and cats that are in need of surgery. We perform surgery on patients at the SLU University Animal Hospital, as well as animals that have been referred from other veterinary clinics.
Our veterinarians who work in the surgery department have extensive experience and high competence in both soft tissue surgery and orthopedic procedures. We also have a veterinarian with a European Diplomate in Surgery. The department also employs our experienced veterinarians and animal nurses who are trained in anaesthesia, working with anaesthetizing patients who undergo surgery with us. Together, our staff ensures that your animal has a calm, safe and pain-free experience before, during and after the surgery.
The Equine Surgery Department
At our equine surgery department, we perform several different types of surgical procedures. Every year, we perform approximately 750 surgeries.
Our surgeons have a high level of expertise with extensive experience in surgery and have been trained by the best in the field. We also have access to specialists in several different areas, which gives us the opportunity to consult for more complicated procedures and for sedation of high-risk patients. We perform the very latest in surgery - everything from standard operations such as castrations and arthroscopies to more complicated procedures such as fracture fixation, eye surgery, abdominal surgery and laparoscopies. Our well-trained and competent veterinary nurses are responsible for sedation of horses, where we have access to modern anaesthesia monitors and ventilator.
At the animal hospital, we also have unique assets in imaging diagnostics such as magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography. The surgery department is staffed around the clock, every day of the year to be able to offer the best possible care in the shortest possible time.
Electrochemotherapy (ECT)
Sarcoids are one of the most common tumors that affect our horses. SLU University Animal Hospital now offers a new treatment method for our patients with sarcoids: Electrochemotherapy (ECT).
ECT uses electric pulse technology that allow the drug “cisplatin” to better penetrate the tumor cells. The success rate with this methiod is very high with 98% of sarcoids cured and no recurrence after four years. The treatment is usually performed during standing surgery, which means that anesthesia is not needed. In most cases, the horse can go home the same day and quickly return to its usual routine. With this method, we can now offer additional treatment options for horses visiting the animal hospital. The equipment used in ECT is manufactured by the company Vetiqure.
