About borrowing and requesting

Page reviewed:  11/06/2025

The SLU University Library is a public library and open to everyone. Here you will find information on how to borrow and request literature, both from the SLU library and from other libraries. You can also suggest a purchase to the library.

Borrowing and requesting

With our search tool Primo you can find books held by the SLU Library. As an employee or student, you automatically have a loan account and can borrow and request material with your usual SLU login. All you need to do is register a PIN code to use our self-check machines.

If you do not belong to SLU, you can contact us to register a library account.

Requesting literature not available in the SLU library

When the literature you need for your studies or work is not available within the SLU library, or is not available online, you can request a loan from another library (interlibrary loan) or a copy of a journal article. You can also suggest that the SLU library purchases the material.

Copies of articles and interlibrary loans from libraries in the Nordic countries are free of charge, but interlibrary loans outside the Nordic countries cost SEK 250. We will contact you before we fulfil your order if there is a charge.

Please note that as a student you cannot order copies of articles that are available in printed format at your local SLU library. You must scan or copy these yourself.

Requesting via Libris

You can also request interlibrary loans or copies of articles via Libris. The first time, you need to create an account in Libris. After logging in, you can search for the material and place a request.

Picking up the material

Books

When you request a book, you choose which SLU library you want to pick up the book from and you will then receive an email when it is ready for pick up. If you are a distance student or employee outside one of our main campuses, you can have the book sent directly to you.

Articles

If you are a SLU employee, we normally send articles from the library's own collections in PDF format to your email address. Articles from other libraries and suppliers are sent in print format by post.

If you are a student, you can pick up your article in the library during our staffed opening hours.

For distance students

If you are a distance student, you have access to some extra services:

  • You can have your books and articles delivered to your home address.
  • You do not have to pay the return postage. Please contact us and we will send you a return shipping label.
  • You will have a slightly longer loan period for the course literature to compensate for the postal service.

Please note that you must contact the library yourself to be registered as a distance student.
