Applying for a degree

Page reviewed:  08/01/2026

Once you have completed your studies, you need to apply for your degree yourself. You apply for your degree in Ladok for students.

Check that you meet the requirements for your degree

  • Read about the requirements for the degree you want to take (e.g. number of credits, compulsory courses, degree projects).
  • Ensure that all your courses are registered, approved and completed in Ladok for students.
  • If you are unsure whether you meet the requirements for a degree, contact your programme director (link) or a study counsellor.
  • Before applying, please review the Frequently Asked Questions about degrees.
  • If you want to apply for multiple degrees, you need to submit an application for each degree. Read about the degree requirements before submitting multiple applications.

What does a degree certificate contain?

The degree certificate consists of a front page stating the degree you have obtained and when it was awarded. If the degree has a main field of study, this is also stated on the front page. The following pages contain a list of the courses included in your degree. The degree certificate is bilingual, with all information provided in both Swedish and English.

The degree certificate is accompanied by a Diploma Supplement. This is an appendix to the degree certificate that describes the programme and the Swedish education system in English. The purpose of the appendix is to facilitate the recognition and crediting of a Swedish degree if you want to apply for a job or continue your studies abroad.

Digital degree certificates

From 2020 onwards, SLU will only issue digital degree certificates. Your degree certificate will be sent to the email address you have registered in Ladok for students.

You can send your degree certificate digitally directly to employers and other higher education institutions. You can obtain a new original if you lose your degree certificate.

The degree certificate is a file in PDF/A format and contains e-signatures. To open the degree certificate correctly, you must first download it to your computer and then open it with a PDF reader. As it is not permitted to edit the document, it may not be possible to open it in a PDF editor.

Certificates issued before 2 March 2020 are only available in paper format. It is not possible to have such a certificate issued digitally.
