Environmental objective Procurement
1. Reducing Environmental Impact in Procurement
Follow-up of at least three procurement annually to determine if, and to what extent, the environmental impact has been reduced.
Action plan:
Procurement decisions to be followed up are taken by the head of procurement in consultation with the Environment Unit before each financial year.
Follow-up:
Winter Road Maintenance, SLU Uppsala and Umeå
The suppliers submitted self-reporting as evidence of compliance with the specified environmental requirements. Following review, it was confirmed that all suppliers meet the mandatory requirements.
Medical Consumable Products for Veterinary Care at SLU
The audit was carried out through email communication with the supplier of the above-mentioned services, as well as a review of documentation. SLU requested evidence of compliance for five procured products through spot checks. The supplier provided documentation confirming that the environmental requirements set out in the procurement are met. The spot checks revealed no deficiencies or non-conformities.
Electricity Trading Brokerage Services, SLU
The supplier provided evidence that they continue to hold the Bra Miljöval certification and also supplied statistics showing that SLU’s electricity consumption in 2024 was sourced 100% from hydropower.
2. Environmental Criteria in Procurement
In cases where it is relevant from an environmental risk analysis perspective, environmental requirements must be listed in all procurements.
Action plan:
Available in the procedure for collaboration between the Procurement Unit and Environment Unit.
Follow-up:
An environmental risk assessment was carried out for all incoming procurements and call-offs during Q1 and Q2 of 2025, totalling 27 cases.
Based on this assessment, the following 15 procurements were identified as relevant for applying environmental requirements. For the remaining procurements, it was not possible or relevant to apply environmental requirements:
- Fire protection services
- Ecology consultancy services
- Office paper
- Promotional products
- Furniture and interior fittings for homelike environments
- ROVs with additional services to the SON network
- Printing services at SLU
- Consumable products for forestry, agriculture and service operations
- Water sampling by helicopter
- Forage harvesting, SLU
- Functional service for fish counting in the Kävlingeån River
- Monitoring of smolt migration and electrofishing in the Mörrumsån River
- Tractor, Alnarp – environmental requirements
- Renovation of the smolt trap at the Herting hydropower station
- Counting of upstream-migrating fish at Herting – Ätran River
3. Increased Number of Environmentally Considerate Call-Offs
Increase the number of call-offs with environmental consideration for focus areas with fixed terms. For 2020-2022, the focus area is domestic hotel nights.
Action plan:
Use several methods to spread information about the environmental considerations that can be taken when procuring. If possible, simplify making environmentally friendly choices in different systems. Follow up environmental performance.
Suggested focus areas:
- purchasing IT products
- purchasing office materials
- fuelling stations for SLU vehicles
- purchasing conference venue facilities
Follow-up:
During Q1 and Q2 of 2025, the share of fossil-free fuel in relation to the total volume of fuel purchased through fuel stations decreased from 11.5% (Q1–Q2 2024), or alternatively from 12.5% (full year 2024), to 9.4%.
The total volume of fuel purchased through fuel stations is measured on an annual basis.
