Säker näring i kretslopp

Welcome to Safe Nutrient Recycling
Dear students During the course, we will use the student portal Canvas where you always will find the latest version of the schedule, as well as all other relevant files and information. Due to the situation with Covid-19 large parts of the course, in particular the lectures, will be online and if lecturers approves we will record the lectures so that you can view it during the course. Some activities are scheduled as Campus activites and we hope to keep it that way at least for the waste treatment laboratory exercise that constitutes a large part of the course and which gives a hands-on experience of waste treatment technologies. We will practice social distancing during the activities at campus and during the waste treatment laboratory exercise you will wear face masks and gloves. If you have your own lab coat please. SLU information to students about Covid-19 can be found at the Student web (https://student.slu.se/en/study-support/emergencies-and-incidents/information-about-the-coronavirus/study/ ) At SLU the students register them self to courses through the shortcut ”Ladok” (https://www.student.ladok.se/student/loggain) at the SLU student web (https://student.slu.se/en/ ). If you register your mobile number we can easily reach you through SMS if there is some late changes e.g. as if a lecturer gets sick. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions. Warmly welcome to the course, looking forward to meet you all! Annika Nordin (course leader)

MX0131 Safe nutrient recycling

Course objectives

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

  1. describe the sources of biological waste and wastewater and explain the characteristics of the different flows,
  2. propose design criteria for safe recycling systems for plant and biological materials from biological waste and wastewater,
  3. describe the difference between microbiological and macrobiological treatment with regard to the biology and processes and the value of the products
  4. Describe the difference between aerobic and anaerobic treatment of solid and liquid waste, with respect to both biology and processes,
  5. Evaluate treatment systems for composting, anaerobic digestion and small scale wastewater, including source separated sewage systems, with regard to microbial risk and environmental impacts of the systems,
  6. suggest systems and processes that ensure that the recycled nutrients are properly hygienised, as well as describe factors that regulate the inactivation of pathogens,
  7. evaluate results from different environmental systems analyses and microbial risk assessments,
  8. write and orally present proposals for recycling systems for nutrition from biological waste and wastewater and describe the factors that regulate inactivation of pathogens.

These course objectives above are related to three different themes of the course and the grouping of the objectives and what criterias the themes are examined in relation to is shown in the table that follow.
