Objectives

The purpose of the course is to provide students with knowledge of procedures in and around veterinary nursing for surgical procedures, including the pharmacological and the clinical physiological anaesthesia with regard to horses, dogs and cats.

After completing the course, students shall be able to:
- describe different aspects of sedation, anaesthesia and analgesia, describe different forms of anaesthesia and prepare a preoperative anaesthesia protocol
- describe different aspects of and methods for euthanasia
- describe the use and handling of anaesthetics, analgesics and sedatives, as well as describing their effects and side effects
- apply practical skills in anaesthesia and perioperative nursing and perioperative hygiene
- describe perioperative care and monitoring, as well as being able to keep an anaesthesia record
- describe the function of basic anaesthesia and monitoring equipment
- describe the rules for handling anaesthetic gases and the preparation and function control of anaesthesia and monitoring equipment
- create a hygiene plan for an animal hospital, focusing on surgical facilities and surgical and surgical wards.
- describe the cleaning, disinfection, care and maintenance of operating theatres, as well as anaesthesic monitoring equipment and surgical equipment.
- identify and explain the need for special perioperative nursing hygiene procedures with high-risk surgery.

Content

By means of lectures, problem-based teaching and compulsory seminars, teaching is given in anaesthesia and analgesia, including pharmacology, clinical physiology and applicable legislation, perioperative nursing and hygiene, as well as the formulation of nursing hygiene plans that take into account sustainability aspects. The ethics involved in euthanasia are taught in a compulsory seminar. By means of demonstrations and practical exercises, students study and practise the following: handling technical medical equipment, preparation and function control of anaesthesia and monitoring equipment, intubation, manual ventilation, performing perioperative hygiene procedures and hygiene procedures for isolated patients. The course includes teaching on organs, dummies and live animals.

Discontinued practice

A student may receive a fail grade and be stopped from participating in the practical training with living animals if there is a tangible risk that the student, through severe incompetence, could injure animals, other persons, themselves, or valuable property if they continued to participate in the practical training. An individual action plan will be prescribed for the student and served to them in writing. The plan will be established by the department responsible for the course after consultation with a study counsellor and the student concerned. This plan, which is decided by the programme director of studies, should indicate which deficiencies in knowledge and skills the student has, which kind of support the student can receive from the department, and when a control can take place that the deficiencies have been resolved. The plan will also specify how this control will be carried out. Each student has the right to a maximum of two control occasions, but no more than one per year. The student may not take part in practical training with living animals until the programme director of studies has controlled and confirmed that the student has the knowledge and skills that are required.
