Botany and Plant Knowledge
Course description
**This course is aimed at you as a new student in Garden Engineering Design and introduces botany and plant knowledge. You will gain valuable knowledge about everything that grows through lectures combined with plant walks and outdoor exercises. This is the course where the plant is the focus! **
A growing problem today is plant blindness. We know less and less about the plants we depend on, and much of the knowledge about species has been lost. The foundation of all studies in garden design is therefore a general knowledge of the plants we see in our private and public garden environments. In this course, you will learn about plant relationships, naming, appearance, and behaviour. You will be introduced to your future professional language, which is necessary to be able to communicate with others in the field.
Through lectures and exercises, you learn to recognize a wide variety of ornamental and useful plants and gain an understanding of the plants' relationship to their habitat. You also acquire basic knowledge of plant physiology and how the plant is affected by its environment. Plant walks and exercises in Alnarp Park allow you to practically reinforce your knowledge. This is a fun and educational course that gives you a solid foundation to build on in your career as a horticultural engineer.
