Objectives

The course intends to provide general knowledge of veterinary nursing in a scientific perspective and give the students opportunity to reflect on theory, scientific methods and ethical challenges. The course intends to prepare the students for participation in or performance of research and developmental projects within veterinary nursing.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to

• search, compile and evaluate scientific literature and critically interpret relevant information,
• within given issues discuss and reflect upon methods used for solving scientific questions in the area of veterinary nursing and other related areas,
• critically discuss ethical and sustainability challenges within veterinary nursing and other related areas together with other students,
• describe different quantitative and qualitative scientific methods and discuss their advantages, disadvantages and application in relation to different scientific questions,
• account for laws and regulations as well as ethical issues regarding the use of animals for scientific purposes,
• explain how the 3Rs (Replace, Reduce and Refine) can be applied when using animals in research and what is meant by a caring culture,
• explain how housing, management and experimental methodology can affect experimental animals and research results,
• write and orally present a project plan and critically review, discuss, as well as give constructive criticism of another student´s product.

Content

Subject-related content

The course contains a broad introduction to university studies at advanced level and the ability to search, compile and critically interpret scientific literature are trained in several parts in the course. The course gives an introduction to veterinary nursing in a scientific approach and the students will meet researchers and their projects within veterinary nursing and other related areas.

A scientific approach, general knowledge of theory and ethical challenges are important course contents. The course focus is on domesticated animals, sport and companion animals included. The course also provides students with basic knowledge regarding legislation and regulations when using experimental animals. The course includes parts of getting to know the university and its structure e.g. the library and its resources and also includes activities to create a respectful and open learning atmosphere.

Teaching formats

To further student learning and promote discussion, a variety of methods are used: lectures, seminars, exercises, supervision and own project work.

The course focuses on the following generic competencies

Information literacy, critical thinking, scientific methods, written and oral communication.

The following components are compulsory

Some seminars and exercises.

Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course

Passed examinations. Passed written and oral presentations as well as opposition of project plan. Approved participation in compulsory components.
