Objectives
The course aims at providing basal knowledge of ecological concepts and ides and ecological consequences of exploitation of natural resources
After completion the student shall be able:
- to account for basal concepts and issues concerning the individual organism relation to its environment, dynamic of populations in space and time
- to account for basal concepts and issues concerning structure and dynamics of plant and animal communities, transfer of energy and matter in ecosystems
- to account for ecological consequences of human exploitation of (biological) natural resources
Content
Content
Lectures and exercises on topics related to how organisms are adapted to their environment, population dynamics, ecological interactions such as competition and predation, structure and dynamics of ecological communities (dealing with e.g. food webs and species diversity), ecosystem ecology (e.g. what determines internal and external cycling of carbon and nutrients, basal constrains of productivity etc.), ecosystem services (what they are and how they are regulated). The course also deals with human exploitation of biological natural resources (lectures and compulsory group works). The course cover e.g. ecological consequences of forestry, agriculture, fishery and hunting (harvest of populations), sustainable use, and national and global treats to biodiversity.
