Objectives
The course aims to provide knowledge of basic ecological concepts and issues.
After completing the course the student should be able to:
- Explain basic concepts and issues related to organisms’ adaptations to the environment.
- Explain basic concepts and issues related to populations changes in time and space.
- Explain basic concepts and issues related to structure and change over time in the communities of organisms.
- Explain basic concepts and issues related to flows of energy and materials in the ecosystem.
- Do simple calculations of population growth and dynamics.
Content
Instruction consists of lectures and exercises involving organisms’ adaptations to their environment, population ecology, species interactions (eg competition and predation), communities (including food webs and species diversity), ecosystems (eg, flows of energy, carbon and nutrients). Lectures also involves the development of ecology as a science and its relationship to other sciences, changes in the communities of organisms, and ecosystems over time, and the human role in ecological processes with respect to the sustainable use of natural resources.
