Course description
The course discusses sustainable use of forests from an economic perspective. The course focuses on how plans, harvest and valuation of forest are pursued based on forest owners’ preferences. Swedish taxation is also included in the course.

**Course registration **
This course has self-registration. Self-registration opens one week before the course starts. Information on how to register can be found in the Ladok Student manual on the student web.

**Withdrawing from a Course **
If you wish to withdraw from the course within three weeks of the start date, you can do so yourself in Ladok. Instructions on how to proceed can be found in the Ladok Student manual. If the course has been running for more than three weeks, notify the course administrator, who will record your withdrawal in Ladok upon your approval. Failure to report withdrawal may affect your ability to take the course at a later time.
**Examinations **

Objectives
The course focuses on developing an understanding of optimally managing forests and forest properties, with a particular focus on optimizing forest land value and on supporting forest owners's decisions. The analysis of forest management under damage risks are also covered.
Upon completion of the course the student should be able to
- account for different criteria to analyze decision-making problems under risk and uncertainty
- construct decision-making models and apply them to common forestry decision-making problems
- analyze and discuss the balance between different types of benefits in the context of sustainable forest management
- apply decision-making models to common problems in the forest sector
- estimate and interpret the economic and financial consequences of different forest management decisions
- apply commonly used methods for valuing forest and forest land
- analyze and discuss trade-offs in the context of sustainable forest management
- orally and in writing, present and discuss forest management decision-making problems
- in English, orally and in writing, present and discuss the decision-making process to respond to forest management problems.
Content
The course consists of two parts. One part covers investment and decision theory, modelling of forestry decision-making problems and various numerical optimization and simulation methods. These tools are applied to study different forest decision-making problems, both under certainty and under risk and uncertainty. The other part of the course deals with valuation of forest properties.
Implementation
The course uses a variety of teaching methods to promote student learning and discussion through problem-based learning (PBL) through lectures, exercises, and case studies.

Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course
Approved exam, approved presentation and completed mandatory parts
- If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
- The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
- If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.

SG0248 Forest Economic Analyses was offered last time fall 2022. For students who did not complete the examinations and other requirements for the course may participate in examinations of this course.
