Objectives

The aim of the course is to introduce the program and university studies in general. Furthermore, the course provides basic knowledge in evolution, ecology, and genetics. After completing the course, the student should be able to:

• give an overview of links between ecology and evolutionary adaptations in vertebrates,
• use correct terminology in the subjects of ecology and evolution,
• describe basic genetics, organization of the genome, how heredity processes work and regulation of gene expression,
• discuss evolutionary, genetic and ecological perspectives on the domestication process,
• outline the risks of invasive species and their impact on the ecosystem,
• discuss the importance of biodiversity,
• discuss ecology and evolution in relation to the global sustainability goals,
• give a basic oral presentation in the subject of evolutionary biology,
• search, review and discuss scientific and popular science literature in evolutionary biology and ecology, individually and in groups, under supervision.

Content

The course cover basic evolutionary theory, evolutionary concepts, domestication, organisms’ adaptations to their environment, ecological structures, and processes at the population and community levels. The course also cover sustainability aspects and biodiversity in relation to evolution and ecology, and ethical aspects related to animals.

The course includes lectures, study visits, group assignments including problem-based learning (PBL), oral presentations, seminars and project work.

During the course the students get training in the following generic competences: written and oral communication, information skills and problem based learning.

Mandatory parts if the course includes exercises, seminars, group assignments and study visits.

Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course

To pass the course, the following requirements need to be met: approved written and oral examination, approved participation in compulsory parts, and approved mandatory assignments.

•  If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
• For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
