Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide an introduction to contemporary landscape architecture, to develop knowledge of the creation of forms and to collaborate in a creative process.

Knowledge and understanding

After completion of the course, the student should be able to:

• describe some significant ideas, methods, and forms of expression within contemporary landscape architecture;
• describe and reflect on their own design process.

Skills and Abilities

After completion of the course, the student should, with supervision, be able to:

• collaboratory formulate and reformulate an open design assignment;
• apply a few methods to test and reassess design ideas;
• build a full-scale project with experiential qualities;
• formulate the project group’s results through images and text.

Content

Through lectures and literature studies, contemporary landscape architecture in the public realm is examined. The course provides an overview of key ideas, methods, and formal and aesthetic approaches from the past fifty years.

Through open-ended design exercises and seminars, students develop the ability to formulate, address, and reflect on design issues in groups. The focus is on an exploratory process involving sketching, modelling, and full-scale investigations in the landscape. The pedagogy is based on group work under supervision and includes a high degree of practical, hands-on work on campus.

By concluding the design process with the construction of a full-scale outdoor installation, students develop an understanding of scale and materiality, as well as the implications of aesthetic choices made during the sketching process.

Each student’s design project is presented through images and text, with particular emphasis on visual communication.

Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course

Successful completion of the course requires completion of required exercises, active participation in seminars, and a passed written or oral examination.

Prerequisite 7.5 credits in applied graphic arts and design can be fulfilled, for example, through courses LK0293 or LK0348.
