Objectives

The purpose of the course is to prepare students before the practical clinical work in animal healthcare, focusing on horses, dogs and cats and to some extent exotic pets.
After completing the course, students shall be able to:

• apply practical skills in veterinary nursing
• Reflect on the performance of clinical tasks based on scientific evidence and proven experience
• Identify surgical instruments and other clinical tools and describe their areas of use

Content

Subject content

Students train, for example, in the following: basic sampling methods, sample handling, common clinical pathology analysis methods, insertion of vein catheters, drugs administration and administration of infusion fluids, clinical examination, ID- tagging, ID-controll, ECG, blood pressure, wound care, bandaging, instrument knowledge, suturing and basic infection prevention and control (IPC). During the tutorials the students practice performing tasks in a correct, ergonomic and safe way and also reflect on the performance based on scientific evidence and proven experience.

Implementation

The course uses different forms of teaching to encourage learning and discussions through practice in clinical skills, demonstrations on dummies and/or live animals, lectures and laboratory work. The course also incorporates group discussions and auscultation at a veterinary clinic as means of teaching’.

This course has a main focus on following general skills:

Information literacy, critical thinking, time planning/coping with time frames

The following elements are compulsory:

Auscultation at a veterinary clinic, discussion on auscultation and specific exercises.

Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course

Approved examination in practical skills. Approved participation in compulsory elements.

•  If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
• For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

Other Information

Expenses related to auscultation are not compensated.

Discontinued practice

A student may receive a fail grade and be stopped from participating in the practical training with living animals if there is a tangible risk that the student, through severe incompetence, could injure animals, other persons, themselves, or valuable property if they continued to participate in the practical training. An individual action plan will be prescribed for the student and served to them in writing. The plan will be established by the department responsible for the course after consultation with a study counsellor and the student concerned. This plan, which is decided by the programme director of studies, should indicate which deficiencies in knowledge and skills the student has, which kind of support the student can receive from the department, and when a control can take place that the deficiencies have been resolved. The plan will also specify how this control will be carried out. Each student has the right to a maximum of two control occasions, but no more than one per year. The student may not take part in practical training with living animals until the programme director of studies has controlled and confirmed that the student has the knowledge and skills that are required.

• The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
• If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
