Objectives

The course has three main objectives. First, to learn to recognize common plants and insects in nature. Second, to briefly understand how knowledge about floristics and entomology can be integrated in crop production and to enable students to follow the development and interaction of crops, weeds and pests during the summer season. Finally, to provide knowledge of some of the companies and organizations that are potential employers for the students.

After completing the course the student should be able to:

• Identify common wild plant species on the basis of their appearance, growth habit and environment.
• Identify common wild insect species on the basis of their appearance, growth habit and environment.
• Briefly describe the conditions of crop production in Sweden.
• Identify and describe some yield-limiting factors among commonly occurring crops, such as attacks by pests and weed competition.
• Discuss pest regulation from a crop- and cropping system perspective.
• Briefly describe how crop production is linked to companies and organizations within the agricultural sector and reflect on different professional roles linked to crop production and agriculture.

Content

Floristics and entomology

This section starts with lectures and an overview of plant and insects systematics, appearance, and adaptation to the environment. A significant part of the time in field is devoted to species identification, but also to exercises to identify plants and insects using identification literature. Identifying species from insect collections or preserved material is a part of the course.

Field studies in arable land

In this section field studies are made to study the development and vitality of crops. During these visits we discuss what factors that influence crops and practices to improve yields, as well as trade-offs the farmer must do. We also visit companies and organizations to discuss professional roles, business ideas and links to primary production. A study trip is a central part but study visits and field exercises are also made in Uppsala. Field studies, study visits and the study trip are compulsory.
